Windows 11 Media Update error stops security updates

Administrators, be careful when using physical media to install Windows security updates, Microsoft warned on December 24. Installing the October or November 2024 updates for Windows 11, version 24H2 using a CD or USB flash drive may prevent the operating system from receiving a future security update.

How to prevent Windows 11 version 24H2 from locking security updates

The problem with the October or November 2024 update for Windows 11, version 24H2 only occurs “when media is created to include” a version released between October 8 and November 12, Microsoft said. Updates delivered over the air via Microsoft Update or the Microsoft Update Catalog are not affected.

To work around the problem, Microsoft recommends skipping the October or November updates if you’re installing new versions using physical media. Installing the December 2024 version — Windows 11, version 24H2 from December 10 or later — prevents the problem from occurring.

Microsoft says they are “working on a solution and will provide more information as it becomes available.”
